While we were working together, we came up with a gate or fence method for multiplying. She really caught onto the idea and doesn't make any mistakes for multiplying double digit numbers. It's difficult for me to write exactly how this method works, so I thought I would just show you on a video. Download the free gate/fence visual below.
Mini Lesson: Double Digit Multiplication
If you are just becoming familiar with Common Core Standards for math, you may be encountering having to model multiplication with an area model. One of my students struggled with this concept for multiplying double digit numbers. We worked through the area model and I observed her working through the traditional way of multiplying. She was having problems with remembering to use a place value holder and adding in the numbers she carried to the top.

So glad to have you come by Cindy! I love that this visual and the area model go hand in hand. Have a good day!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much. This is a great alternative for some of those kids that need another way to work through double digit multiplication. Can't wait to try it in the next two weeks.
ReplyDeleteThanks-- it looks great!
