Summer Helps for Parents Part 2

Now every parent probably knows that the number one way to improve reading is just by reading. But why is it so hard to make time for that during the summer? All your students will need is just 20 minutes as day of reading preferably with their parent.

How do you convince the parent to stop and take that 20 minutes with their child? (That is a whole post in and of itself!) My advice for now, just kindly prompt them to read with their child. Parents can choose a chapter book and read it outloud to the whole family. Your student will still need time of reading outloud with an adult each day. I've selected some books to help parents. All of these resources are readily available at book stores or the library.

Reading:

Bob Books

Bob Books are good for young readers.  They have an entire series of books aimed at different levels of reading.  What I like about them is that they work with phonics and give suggestions to parents for activities or things to point out while reading.


Spectrum Reading Series

Spectrum Reading Series is a workbook.  They have each grade level and upper grade phonics.  Inside you'll find worksheets kids can do alone or with an adult.  To keep boredom at bay, parents can take the concepts inside and use them in the chapter book they are reading to teach the lesson.  You could give them their own Flip the Chip game board to write words on and make it a fun game.  Another idea is to check out file folder games to parents to work on phonics lessons with them.

Reading Rockets Summer Reading Lists

Reading Rockets is a fantastic site full of ideas for helping struggling readers.  Every summer, they compile a summer reading list full of fun books to read.  You can go there directly and get the lists yourself in PDF format, print them out, and hand them out to parents.
