I can't take any credit for this idea that I am about to share! It came from Elizabeth who is a member of my secret Facebook group called Just for Tutors. One day we talked about how we organize our tutoring sessions and she busted out this awesome way! I never thought of that and loved the idea so much. Thanks for sharing Elizabeth.
So I am going to call it a "Stagger Session". A lot of parents want one on one tutoring, but it can be expensive. Staggering students can help keep the cost down and also meet the desire of having one on one tutoring. Here's Elizabeth's description of how it works.
"It's pretty simple, really. And I really enjoy (and the kids seem to also) having more than just one student to work with at a time. An example of a day would be like this:
4:00-5:00 Tim (1st grade-Reading/Math)
4:30-5:30 Claire (3rd grade-Math)
-4:00-4:30: Work with Tim on Reading
-4:30-5:00: Work with Tim and Claire on Math. This could be an activity they do together or individually, providing individual instruction as needed
-5:00-5:30: Work with Claire on Math
I don't have an exact science to grouping the kids, but base it on the parents/kids availability, the students abilities/needs/level/behavior. It has worked great and I really haven't had any problems with it. I always make sure to ask the parents beforehand and make sure it is okay with them. It's nice to get one-on-one time and more of a "small-group" time in each tutoring session."
Doing it this way is so wise in many ways. You maximize your time and not to mention your moey too! Instead of only making $40 in one hour for one student, you end up making closer to $60 if you charge both students $30 per hour. It's a win-win for everyone involved.
