Welcoming New Students

How do you like to welcome students to a new school year or tutoring session?  A lot of kids have apprehension when it comes to change (don't we all??).  I have always thought it was fun to get actual letters in the mail.  It's so out of the ordinary and special.  How about you?  This cartoon below cracks me up below.

There really is something special about getting mail.  To welcome new students, why not send them a letter in the mail? Can you image their faces as their parent tells them they have a letter?  Even the parents will be surprised! With these reactions, you're off to a great start with communication between you, the child, and parents.

Inside the card, you could write about yourself, what you'll be doing this next school year, or invite them to share a joke with you on the first day of school.  Have joke books available if they forgot and then spend a little bit of time to sharing jokes.
